This morning we
left Shenzhen and headed north to Guangzhou.
Shenzhen is a very growing city.
Only 40 years ago there were only 15,000 people and today there are 15
million. They considered the 15,000
people only a small village. Unlike the
rest of the Guangdong province which speaks Cantonese, the rest of the country
speaks Mandarin Chinese. After the two
hour drive we visited the Haid Group fish farm.
They started out in 1998 with feed additives and in 2002 they started
work with chickens and ducks, and today are one of the largest ag companies in
southern China. Besides additives they
created ways to purify the water to ensure their products would work properly. In their ponds they had catfish, carp, sea
bass, shrimp, along with other native fish and ducks. It was interesting because they controlled
everything from breeding until market, similar to our livestock operations. It took about 6 months for grass carp to grow
to about 2 and a half pounds. The people
at the Haid Group were very excited to show us their operation and welcomed us
with a personalized welcome sign.
After this we
checked into the hotel and enjoyed our first French fries we have had in a
while at the local restaurant, and celebrated Kyle Walker's birthday with a
cake. Even though it had rained for a
while, it quit just in time and we were able to ride on the Pearl River
Cruise. The night view of Guangzhou was
spectacular as lots of buildings had very cool lightings. One of the neatest buildings was the IFC Tower,
which is 600 meters tall and the second largest T.V. tower in the world. This ended our first day in Guangzhou and we
all had a blast.
